Hynobiidae (Cope, 1859) Asiatic Salamanders
Hynobius kimurae - photo courtesy of Henk Wallays, Henk.Wallays@pandora.beHynobiids are small to medium sized Salamanders found mostly throughout Asia. Salamandrella keyserlingii has the largest distribution of all caudates, which includes areas of Japan, Mongolia, China, and Korea, to eastern Russia. The total range is estimated around 12 million km2. All species have external fertilization.

The family Hynobiidae is related to the family Cryptobranchidae, with which it forms the Suborder Cryptobranchoidea (primitive Salamanders). All species have well-developed lungs, with the exception of the genus Onychodactylus, which are lungless...more about Hynobiidae.
